Flycaster Brewing Co., was the 37th visit on my bucket list of Washington State breweries. I found Flycaster using the Untappd app and set out for an afternoon of brewery tours in the Kirkland area.
Flycaster Brewing is located is a small strip mall / shopping plaza not far from the freeway. The location is easy to find and parking is not a problem. The taproom for this nano-brewery is very inviting with lots of warm wood accents, some exposed brick and dark paint on the walls. I arrived just as the taproom was opening at noon on Sunday and was greeted immediately. I was invited to grab a seat and even check out the brewing equipment. (FlyCaster was operating on a keg system at the time and with the amount of space available they definitely have room to grow to a larger system in this location.) The brewmaster was working on a new batch and had no problems letting me look over his shoulder, ask questions and and even sample some of the grains. The brief tour was great and creates a very relaxing, laid-back atmosphere. Also worth noting, Flycaster serves complimentary seasoned pretzels, which were delicious!
I tried all six beers they had on tap, which included 2 seasonal brews. Their four flagship beers were all solid. Here are the highlights:
- Bonefish Blonde – Pours a clear golden color and leaves a little lacing on the glass. Crisp and light bodied. This is really well done for this style. Very easy drinking with a nice smooth flavor. ABV: 5.0%, IBU: 19
- Hopper Pale Ale – Pours a nice clear copper color with decent white head. A nice hoppy pale ale. Citrus flavors up front with a slightly bitter finish. Very enjoyable. ABV: 5.5%, IBU: 38
- Yakima River Red – Pours a clear amber color. Everything you would expect from a red ale. A little pine on the nose, decent malt body and dry finish. Easy to drink and not too malty or sweet. ABV: 6%, IBU: 35
- Rocky Ford IPA – Pour a nice amber color. A bit citrus and a bit floral with some malty sweetness to it. Very smooth for the higher ABV. Definitely has a bitter hop bite to it on the finish, but not overpowering. ABV: 8.0%, IBU: 65
